Independent Schools

In Camden, nearly 500 of our members work at independent schools.  As these schools do not share a single management/ownership structure, policies and procedures will be more varied than at state funded Local Authority schools.  However, every member of staff is legally entitled to join a union and to seek advice and support.  It is illegal for employers to treat people unfavourably on the basis of union membership and activity.

While we do not have recognition agreements that allow for collective representation and negotiation, we are able to do a lot on your behalf and you are able to take part in local meetings.

If you are a member at a Camden independent school, you are part of the Camden NEU District (a union structure which operates in a geographical area).

You can find out more about how the NEU works to support members in the independent sector here: https://neu.org.uk/independent.
